Reminder: Jr High Youth Group Change

This was our last week in our unit about sex. This week we talked about God’s forgiveness in light of sexual sin. Please discuss the following with your children.
1. What do we need to do if we’ve messed up when it comes to sexual purity? (Ask God’s forgiveness.)

2. Why is it hard to forgive yourself for your sexual sins? (You still carry the guilt and consequences.)

3. According to 2 Corinthians 5:17, what happens when you turn away from your sin? What does this mean? (You become a new creation. You are no longer dead to sin, you are alive in Christ. You are someone different, you are a Child of God.)

4. According to Psalm 103:12, how far does God remove our sin when we ask for forgiveness? (As far as the East is from the West)

This was our third week in a series that talks about God’s design for sex. This week we focused on healthy, Biblical boundaries for sex?

1. How far is too far? (This is the wrong question to be asking, we should rather be asking how we can set up boundaries so that we won’t go too far.)

2. In each one of the students’ stories, how did they feel after they crossed boundaries they didn’t want to cross? (Regret)

3. Read 2 Corinthians 10:5. What does it mean to guard our minds? (To make sure that every thought is Godly and to eradicate any ungodly thoughts. To make sure that what we take in is Godly.)

4. Read Jeremiah 29:11. How might thinking about your future influence the boundaries you establish? (What you do now has an impact on your future i.e. abstaining for your future spouse etc.)

5. Why is accountability so important when it comes to boundaries? (Helps you keep the boundaries you’ve established. Keeps you in check with God’s word and God’s design for sex.)

Lots of Stuff to be Aware of in Jr High

Dear Parents,
There's lots to be aware of with the Jr High Youth Ministry as we head into Lent. The first is the schedule. Starting February 22nd and running through March 14th, we will be having our Lenten Family Services from 6:30 to 7:30. Rather than viewing this as putting Youth Group on hold, I like to view it as Youth Group being moved to the Family Services. I don't even like that the word "service" is in the name. These aren't services, they are opportunities for everyone of all ages to spend time learning about God together. It's like Youth Group for everyone. All this to say that every Jr High student is encouraged to come and sit with the Jr High as we learn about God together. These services run from 6:30 to 7:30.

Before each of the Family Services, there will be a meal served starting at 5:30. There is no charge for these meals. You are welcome to make a donation to cover the cost of food but this is completely optional. These meals are a great opportunity to spend time with others. If your family cannot attend the meal, you are still welcome and encouraged to send your Jr High student. There will be plenty of other students for them to eat with.

On March 21st at 6:00 is our Spring Fellowship Supper. We have 2 Fellowship Suppers each year. You are welcome and encouraged to attend this supper. If you will be attending, please sign up in the back of church or you can contact me and I can put your name down for you.

Also there will be no Youth Group on Wednesday March 28th due to Spring Break.

Please make sure to check out the Jr High Schedule of events here to keep up with the all these events and happening.

Finally, after the Lenten Services, starting April 4th we will be resuming Youth Group as normal on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00. At this point we will be taking 3 weeks to talk about sex. Please read my letter to you as parents about this sensitive subject. You can read that letter here.

Dear Parents,
This marks our first week in a four week series on learning God's truth about sex. This week we looked at different lies of the world about sex. Please discuss the following with your children.

1. The first lie of the world is that sex is no big deal. Why is this a lie? (God says sex is a big deal because it's designed for a man and a women within the context of marriage.)

2. Another lie is that sex is just physical. Why is this a lie? (Sex is also emotional and can have lasting effects when not done according to God's design.)

3. The world says God is down on sex. Why is this not true? (God designed sex and He wants us to have good sex. That is sex as He designed it within the context of marriage.)

4. The world also gives us the idea that everyone is having sex. Why is this not true? (Most people actually aren't having sex. We are just made to think everyone is because of what is portrayed in media.)

5. The last lie is that it is impossible to be pure. Why is this a lie? (God commands purity, we can be pure if we rely on Him.)

6. Thinking about all the stories we watched of the three students: Jillian, Wesley, and Emily; what was a common theme in all their stories. (They regret having sex before they were married.)

7. Why are the lies of the world about sex attractive? (It's what we want to hear.)

Final Tubing Details

Tubing is only 2 days away! Just a few reminders before we go. Dress warm! This means full out snow gear, boots, jackets, snow pants, hats, gloves, scarf, face mask if you want. We'll be in the snow at night so bundle up! Also make sure you're at church by 4:00 on Saturday ready to go. Finally, we will be stopping to eat AFTER we tube so make sure you eat something substantial before tubing to hold you over till we eat afterward. The Truth About Sex - Letter to Parents

Dear Sr. High Parents,

This Sunday we will be starting a new series entitled “The Truth About Sex.” This is a video and discussion curriculum that features Bible teaching from Doug Fields. Doug Fields was the featured speaker at the Student Leadership Conference that was attended by several of our Seniors this past summer.

The aim of this series is to help students discern Biblical truth from lies of the world in regards to sex. Students are exposed daily to loads of lies about sex from the world. Therefore, it is critically important that we discuss sex in a Biblical context so that our students will be connected to God’s attitude about sex.

I chose this video series because it is frank and honest. Throughout the videos, students give real testimonies about their sexual experiences and shortcomings. In addition, Doug Fields doesn’t dance around the bush when discussing sensitive material. This video boldly talks about the dangers of pornography and pre-marital sex. It also explains how sex was originally created by God to be a beautiful expression of love between a man and a woman within the context of marriage. These are just a few of the topics covered in this series.

As your Youth Director, I want to partner with you as parents as we explore this sensitive subject. I have uploaded the series trailer video; you are strongly encouraged to watch by visiting http://www.vimeo.com/35323348. In addition, I would like to make all of our materials available to you at your request. This would give you a chance to watch the videos and understand what your children are learning. In addition, each week I will be posting Parent Follow Up Questions on the youth blog to give you a chance to discuss this material with your children. I would strongly encourage you as parents to use those discussion questions as an opportunity to take an active role in your child’s spiritual development.

Dear Parents,
This week we looked at one of Abraham’s mistakes. We looked at the story of Hagar and Ishmael in Genesis 16 and 21:8-20. This is a lot of scripture to cover so instead of reading these chapters word for word, I summarized the story for the students. I also summarized due to the sensitive nature of this story. Before discussing these questions you as parents might want to read these passages.

1. What was God’s plan for Abraham? What had God promised to Abraham? (Give him a son)

2. Instead of waiting for God’s plan, what plan did Abraham come up with? (To have a son with Hagar)

3. Why do you think Abraham made his own plan instead of waiting on God’s plan? (Hard to wait, took faith, it’s easier to make your own plan)

4. What problems did Ham’s plan cause? (Sarai hating Hagar and Ishamel and ultimately sending them away.)

5. Why do we have a tendency to be like Ham and make our own plans instead of relying on God’s plan? (We don’t have faith, we want things to happen on our time frame instead of God’s)

6. What do we compromise when we create our own plan? (Our faith in God)

Sunday School Current Events - Blood Money

Dear Sr. High Parents,
In preparation for Sanctity of Life Sunday, we will be watching a pro-life documentary as part of our current events in Sunday School. The documentary is an hour and a half so it will take us several weeks to get all the way through. The documentary is entitled "Blood Money." This documentary looks into how abortion is a lie that is more about making money than helping women make a good choice. You can visit the film's website here: http://bloodmoneyfilm.com.

As we prepare to watch this film I want you as parents to know that this film contains stories that are very graphic. Although they do not show any graphic images, several women give graphic details when talking about their experiences with abortion. I appreciate that these stories aren't thrown in for shock value. Rather, they support the film's premise that abortion is about extortion, genocide, and profit.

If any of you have any questions related to the film I am more than happy to answer them. If any of you would like to view the film ahead of time, I can provide the video file to you on a DVD that you can watch on your computer.

I chose to watch this video as it exposes abortion for what it truly is - legalized genocide. As believers in Christ, I think it is important that we understand the lie from hell that is abortion. I hope that the film will help open our students' eyes to the depravity of abortion and to the depravity of those who promote its' lies.

1. What book of the Bible is the story of Abraham found in? (Genesis)

2. Read Genesis 15:1-8, 18. What were the two promises that God made to Abraham? Hint: verses 5 and 7. (1. Children/Offspring and 2. Land)

3. Initially what seemed to be the problem with these promises? Hint veses 2,3 and 8,18,19. (Ham didn’t have children and the land was already occupied.)

Today we continued our “Big Word Theology” series. This week we talked about Anthropomorphism. Please discuss the following with your students.

1. What is Anthropomorphism? (Describing God in human terms)

2. We use comparisons and familiar things to help us understand God. Read Job 19:21, Psalm 33:6, and Psalm 34:15. How is anthropomorphism used in each of these instances? (God doesn’t actually hit people, but he does figuratively hit them with truth, God didn’t actually create through his breath, but he figuratively spoke the stars into existence, God doesn’t have eyes or ears but he sees us and hears us.)

3. God is not human and not limited to human descriptions. How might using human descriptions for God limit him? (God might lose his amazingness in your mind, God might lose his specialness etc.)

4. How does using human terms to describe God, help us understand him? (Helps us understand what God is like, his character, his attributes. Helps us relate to God, helps us build our relationship with him.)

5. We can never completely understand God. Why is this a good thing? What’s something that we will never know the answer to about God? (Because it makes God God and makes him greater than us. How can God exist in eternity past? How can we live eternally in heaven? Do babies go to heaven? Do pets go to heaven? Etc.)

This year for Sunday School we are continuing our Current Event curriculum from last year where we look at our culture and examine it from a Christian Worldview. We are also doing The Universe Next Door. This is a book on the main worldviews. This week was our first week doing Universe Next Door as we started talking about our own worldview, Christian Theism. This material is extremely advanced and can be very difficult to understand. However, I told the students that one of my goals in doing this is to ready them for college when they will encounter philosophy, theology and the metaphysical. Please encourage your kids to try their hardest to understand. All I ask is that they try to put forth an effort. Also since I'm working my way through the book, all the students are encouraged to read through the book themselves. Anyone who completes the book in this school year will be given a reward. This week we continued our series in Colossians by talking about Colossians 3:5-10. Our lesson title was “Self Fashion Show.” Please discuss the following with your children.

1. Read Colossians 3:9. What is the first “action” according to this passage? (Take off your old self.)

2. Read Colossians 3:5-9. How do you take off your old self? (Put sin to death.)

3. What is so important about the idea of “putting to death” rather than just “stopping.” (Putting to death is much stronger. It implies you’re completely getting rid of it. You’re killing it so it won’t ever happen again.)

4. What are the subtle “tense” implications of the language in Colossians 3:5-9 which talk about the old self? (Paul uses past tense to imply that the old self, is in the past. It is done with.)

In our study of Colossians we touched on what can be a difficult issue. We talked about real and fake faith. We studied Colossians 2:6-8, 16-23. Please discuss the following questions with your children.

1. Read Colossians 2:6. What are ways in which you can “know the rules” or stay “rooted” in your faith? (Continue to develop your relationship with Christ via prayer, Bible reading, faith discussions, mentoring etc.)

2. Why is it so easy for us to buy into “human teachings.” (Verse 23: because “human teachings” often have the appearance of godliness but are actually not godly.)

3. Why would this passage of scripture and this “real faith” issue have special significance for a community like Oostburg? (Oostburg is a very “churched” community and it’s easy to create our own view of what Christianity should look like when we are all labeled as “Christians”)

4. Read Colossians 2:16-19. In this passage Paul describes people who create extra-biblical rules for Christianity. Identify some false “human rules for Christianity” that are alive and well in our community and world.

Fall Fellowship Supper/Auction

Wednesday October 26th is the annual Fall Fellowship Supper and Auction. We will not be having Jr High Youth Group that evening. Instead, students and their families are encouraged to come to the church fellowship hall for dinner and an auction to follow. The Jr High will be donating a night of babysitting to the auction. That night will be Friday December 2 so all Jr High students should make sure to clear their schedules for that evening.

Sr. High students need to start thinking about what they will donate to the auction. Usually we've discussed this in Sunday School; however, I have been absent from Sunday School for the past 3 weeks due to retreats, vacations, and fundraisers. This week we continued our unit on Colossians by talking about the Supremacy of Christ. We looked at Colossians 1:15 – 20.

1. Why did Paul feel the need to address Christ’s supremacy in Colossians? Why did he talk about it a lot? (There were lots of other beliefs at the time and Paul wanted to show that Christ is the truth, the only way.)

2. What does it mean to say that Christ is supreme? (Christ is the truth, the only way, Christ is the real deal, the top dog.)

3. We looked at 3 examples from Colossians 1:15-20 of why Christ is supreme. Read verses 15 and 16. What is the example of Christ’s supremacy in these verses? (Christ is creator)

4. What implication does being created by Christ for Christ have for your life? (You belong to God, your life should be dedicated to bringing him glory)

5. Read verses 15, 17 and 18. What examples of Christ’s supremacy do these verses talk about? (Christ is First)

6. What does it mean when Colossians says that Christ is before all things? (Christ is ultimate authority, he is ultimately in charge)

7. Verse 17 says that in Christ all things hold together. How does knowing your continued existence is dependent upon Christ impact you? (Thankful for the life Christ’s given you, make sure to serve Christ in everything you do.)

This week we continued our series in James by talking about speech. Our lesson was entitled “Word Weaponry” and we studied James 3:3-12. Please discuss the following with your children.

1. Read James 3:3-6. One of our 3 points from this passage was that little words can do big things. What are the 3 examples that James 3:3-6 talks about illustrating that little things can do big things? (Bits for horses v3, Rudders on ships v4, Sparks starting fires v5)

2. The statement “You are worthless” is little, but it has big implications. What are some of the big implications that this statement carries? (God values and loves everyone, you are devaluing what God values, this statement is not God-honoring etc.)

3. Read James 3:7-8. Our next point was that speech is dangerous. Discuss how what you say can be so dangerous.

4. If you have an example that you can think of, be vulnerable with your child and give them an example from your own life when your speech caused harm to someone else.

5. Read James 3:9-12. Our 3rd point was that we must consistently use Godly speech. Just like Lake Michigan is only fresh water and not both salt and fresh, we need to only use our mouth for Godly speech. Why can’t both Godly and ungodly speech come out of our mouths as believers? (God only wants us to use Godly speech, If you claim to be a believe you need to back up that claim by using Godly speech.)

6. Take time to identify areas with your child where they can use their speech to be God-honoring. (Ways in which they talk to you as their parents…?)

For students going on the mission trip and for those of you parents who signed up to help with the first lunch fundraiser, here is the email I just sent out with info about the first lunch.

Dear Parents,
Thank you for signing up to help with our first Compton 2012 lunch fundraiser! Here are some of the details as to how I envision this lunch.

We will be preparing for the meal during the sunday school hour. All students attending the trip will be helping with all the lunches. On each of the three lunch dates, I will pull the Sr. High and the 8th grade from Sunday School to help set up and then serve.

We will be serving the food buffet style. People are welcome to come and eat whenever and then to leave whenever. In the bulletin I've indicated that the buffet will be open from 11:30 to 1:00. Usually everyone has eaten by 1:00 anyway so we end up clean up earlier than specified.

Here's what I was thinking for the menu:

Grilled Cheese, Tomato Soup, Chicken (noodle, rice) Soup, Salad, Bars, Lemonade, Water

Grilled cheese stuff, canned tomato soup, salad, and lemonade we could purchase; however, does anyone have any strong opinions on buying or making Chicken noodle, rice soup? If anyone is willing to make it then I'm fine with that, but if you can deal with the taste for the sake of convenience then I am fine with that too. I just want to know what you're thinking.

Here's what we need from you as parents:
Each family should make and bring a pan of bars. This way we get a variety and people seem to enjoy that. Also if someone is willing to make a huge pot of chicken noodle or rice soup, than let me know. Does anyone have a Costco membership so that we could purchase the rest of the stuff? i.e. bread, cheese, butter, tomato soup, salad, lemonade. Finally if anyone has a griddle please bring it. We will need as much griddle space as possible so we can get those grilled cheeses grilling!

I'm excited as we demo this new fundraising tactic. Also I love thinking about the reason for all this fundraising. These mission trips tend to become life-highlights!

This week we started a 5 week series in James. We will be going through the book and discussing the main themes. This week our lesson was entitled “No Pain No Gain” and we focused on James 1:2-4, 12. Please discuss the following with your children:

1. Start by having your child identify a difficult time/situation in their life. Make sure they can think of a legitimate trial that they have experienced.

Re-Thinking Jr. High Curriculum

Dear Jr High Parents,
After last night we've done some re-thinking about doing sex as a teaching topic with Jr. High this year. We have an incredibly difficult dynamic with 6th grade girls and 8th grade boys in our Jr. High this year and we're going to have to work extra hard to create a comfortable atmosphere all year.

We've realized that talking about sex early this year might be a poor choice since we're trying so hard already to create a comfortable atmosphere. Also some of you have expressed that you have yet to address the topic in your own homes with your children. I would hate to discuss sex without you having discussed it in your own homes.

Here's our plan of action for now. We will save the sex curriculum as a possible option for the Spring. That will give us some time to develop a comfortable atmosphere and it will give us the opportunity to work on bridging the gap between our 6th and 8th grade. Also this would give me some time to get you the details about what we'll teach before we teach it. Until that time I'd encourage you as parents to start having discussions about sex with your 6th graders. If they don't know about sex now, they will learn soon. One of the unfortunately realities of middle school is students will be exposed to sex whether we like it or not. I remember that some of my first encounters with the topic of sex were in 6th grade.

This is an unfortunate reality but what better way to deal with it than starting to discuss sex as believers early on. This way as they learn about sex from, school, tv, media, other students etc. we as believers can teach our children about what God says about sex.

To summarize: We will hold off on the sex stuff for now. We will re-explore the option of talking about sex in the Spring. For now, start the discussions in your own homes not only for us but for your own child's spiritual growth.

These are the types of emails I love sending because I think they are an indicator of a good parent/youth director relationship. I always view you and I as partners assigned with the tasks of developing a robust faith. I think we're at least doing some of that right :)

You are welcome to bring other beach stuff i.e. squirt guns, footballs, frisbees, etc.

The weather hasn't been much of a friend to us this summer. Our swimming night was cold, our park fundraiser was moved inside, our scavenger hunt was re-scheduled due to rain. Tonight we will have Jr. High at the church. We'll stick to the same time of 6 to 8 but instead of going to the lake, make sure you come to the Youth House.
